After installing eye dropper for chrome I will always open the eyedropper page in addition to my home page.
I have changed my chrome options multiple ways including open the following pages and open home page, but can not get eye dropper to not open as a new tab whenever chrome is started.
Suggestions or bug fix would be appreciated. As of right now I have even tried the completely disable function and I still get a eye dropper tab every time I open chrome.
It is possible sometime because of way how Eye Dropper is picking colors. Can you please fill issue on github page and give me more info about your chrome version, operation system and page/element on which you are trying? Thanks.
Sometimes I build things on the machine before uploading to a test server online, but the Google Policy does not allow for someone to pick colours locally? Really?
Sorry for late reply, your comment was hidden between tons of spam.
Unfortunately yes, because of security normal extension isn’t able to work on local pages. I’ll try to ask google developers on GDD on Tuesday if there is some other way. If you really need this functionality, please fill issue on github.
YES, I do almost 100% of my development work locally and this issue is a massive pain in the butt. I have to switch to firefox or open a screenhot in PS to grab a color from an img. Your extension is awesome but this issue seems like a really baic problem that should have been solved a long time ago.
Thanks for your comment Mack. It can really seams basic but it really is not. It is simply security problem because when you allow me to access local files, I can do almost anything with your computer if I turn evil. Because of this google has some rules, documents needed for signing and mainly really long approval period for every update to extension with access to local files. And I decided to not go this way.
I have this still on my long term todo so we will see.
I must have “missed the memo” but why won’t Chrome let me use eye-dropper on a local html file? I see similar behavior with some of the ruler tools (e.g., MeasureIt, etc.) and I can’t seem to find any real explanation why this is “against their policy”.
Thanks for any clarification that you can provide…this is making me “feel stupid”.
Hi, it isn’t stated anywhere on webpage. Only explanation from my side is in on github.
Problem is very simple, google policy doesn’t allow extension which access local pages automatically. I have to sign some legal documents if I want Eye Dropper to support local pages – this should be easy – but hard part is that every time I’ll upload some update, it will take couple of days to manually review extension from google’s side.
I welcome your suggestions how to solve this. Best if you can comment in linked github issue.
I installed this on my macbook. It’s not working. I see the eyedropper icon in the browser bar but when I slect ‘Pcik Color from webpage’ nothing happens.
I’m already working on fixing this but it is really problematic as I have no access to any macbook. If you are interested in updates, please watch related issue on github.
I downloaded and installed the extension, but when i try to “pick color from webpage” it doesn’t work. I have restarted my browser and everything – nothing.
It appears that the eyedropper won’t detect colors on images; in fact it doesn’t appear to recognise images altogether and simply detects the color that would be behind that image if the image were to not be there. Support to detect the color of images would be great as it’s not much effort me to simply check the source and view the color myself.
Could you please report this problem on github issues page with link to page where you have this problem? Eye Dropper should work with images without any problem.
Never encountered this problem. Is it possible you used “hide this button” feature in past and thats because it isn’t showing?
As for Alt+P I can see that in newer versions of chrome it isn’t set by default. Open your extension page and in right bottom corner there are “Keyboard Shortcuts” and assign Alt+P for pick color from web and it should work.
Unfortunately this isn’t posible with Chrome policies or better its hard to achieve without complicating whole process. I’m working around this by using local web server on custom domain like http://someweb.local/
Hey Sonik, thanks for report. Can you please write me on which page you are trying this, version of your Chrome and operating system? Thanks.

Eye Dropper is created and enhanced in my leisure time for free. Your donation allows me to continue my development and any amount is greatly appreciated.

It reports different colors than the background color specified for an element in the CSS when I pick the color of that element.

you just have a little typo – on the assign keyboard shortcut box, ‘assign’ is spelled wrong. Other than that, great app and thanks!
